A Message from Audubon International

Audubon International is pleased to join in partnership with Versant Properties, LLC and the Versant community development through their membership in the Audubon International Gold Signature Program. Our partnership is premised on a shared commitment to responsible planning and development, habitat conservation, water quality protection, and environmental education.

Audubon International believes that all land and resources are valuable and that our environment is the natural capital upon which all living creatures, including human beings, depend for life. Why, then, would we be positive about a development? The land and resources of Versant are significant in part because of the expanse of mature tree canopy sheltering a variety of habitats that support many species of native birds and other forms of wildlife. More importantly, Versant is part of a significant watershed that provides ecological value to the entire region, as well as an opportunity for planning a truly sustainable community.

But what does sustainability mean? It is the ability to use resources for the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It means creating a place where resources are conserved and protected for future generations. Audubon International believes that while ecology, economy, and social equity form the balanced triad of sustainability, ecology must be first among these equals. It is the environment–the world in which we live–that sustains us all.

As a non-profit organization, Audubon International alone cannot merge the ecologic and economic components of sustainability. It requires establishing conservation partnerships with businesses, government agencies, universities, other non-profits and citizens. These partnerships must be based on a shared vision of the principles of sustainability. Our partnership with Versant Properties, LLC is an example of merging an environmental philosophy with economic reality.

Through our partnership with Versant Properties, LLC and their commitment to an environmental approach, Versant is on track to become a model for sustainable development. We are confident that now, and for future generations, Versant will be as protective of nature as it is welcoming to the human spirit.
